Owning a physical music library in the too-big-to-count category has become more of a burden than a point of pride. The thousands of alphabetized compact discs gathering dust in my Kansas basement (5,000? 10,000?) are of no help during my travels. When the internet is more a rumor than a reality, I’m limited to sounds previously downloaded to my phone. The faint flickers of connections accessible as I roam aren’t even good enough to provide an account of the new releases I’m missing. The predicament helps me understand why much of the global population sticks to vintage sounds rather than savoring new music. Older isn’t necessarily better, but it’s certainly much easier.
