Tedious obeisance to the suffocating weight of Kansas City’s jazz history frustrated me as I bounced between jazz gigs last night. Although I love the sound of 1948, I listened in vain for a single acknowledgement of the current millennium.
I have little doubt I’ll eventually tire of the au courant style of improvised music exemplified by Notes With Attachments and How You Been, but my immediate affection for Magic Object indicates that it’s not happening anytime soon.
The new album by Play Time- the trio of Will Epstein, Booker Stardrum and Ben Vida- furthers the sound associated with Pino Palladino, Blake Mills and SML. (Stardrum is SML’s drummer.) The merger of minimalism, electronica, indie-rock and cosmic jazz on Magic Object is everything I longed to hear last night
