Makaya McCraven

The Top EPs of 2025

Only because the rollout of his recent work was so aggravating, I disqualified Makaya McCraven for this exercise. I dispensed with the four excellent EPs released by the disruptive musician in 2025 by collectively placing them at #9 in this ranking. The Top Reissues and Reimaginings of 2025

A bundle of cassettes containing unreleased Bruce Springsteen studio recordings was one of my most cherished possessions in the 1980s. Much of that material was officially released this year. Springsteen’s buried treasures meant more to me decades ago, but the following ranking reflects the sustained value of the illicit cache. Hours of obscure Sun Ra sounds also saw the light of day in 2025. I acknowledge that embarrassment of riches with only one listing. Caveat: I have yet to tackle new collections of rarities by icons including Anthony Braxton, Bob Dylan, Rahsaan Roland Kirk and the Who.

1. Bruce Springsteen- Tracks II: The Lost Albums
Perfect world.

2. Bruce Springsteen- Nebraska ‘82: Expanded Edition

The Top Fifty Performances of 2024

(Original image of Vasily Petrenko and Isata Kanneh-Mason at Helzberg Hall by There Stands the Glass.)

Just because I’m no longer paid to review concerts doesn’t mean I stopped going out. The 157 music performances I’ve attended so far in 2024 represent an unprecedented financial outlay. The out-of-pocket figure would have been even more breathtaking had I been able to bring myself to acquire exorbitantly priced tickets to sold-out appearances in the Kansas City area by Bad Bunny, J. Cole and Grupo Frontera. Visiting the bucket list venues Wigmore Hall, Wiener Hofmusikkapelle and Wiener Staatsoper and catching the Jesus and Mary Chain, Makaya McCraven, Negativland and Jah Wobble for the first time was worth the expense. Unless I live longer than anticipated, the investment will have been worth it.

Album Review: Marquis Hill- Composers Collective: Beyond the Jukebox

Abstaining from hand-wringing about the (un)popularity of jazz takes a great deal of willpower. It’s a relief, consequently, when musicians directly address the worrisome topic on their recordings.

Marquis Hill’s potent new album Composers Collective: Beyond the Jukebox contains several spoken word interludes about the common perception of jazz as an irrelevant form of art. The vitality of the music refutes the notion.

Beyond the Jukebox demonstrates several ways in which jazz can be meaningful to broad audiences in 2024. Joined by luminaries including Gerald Clayton, Caroline Davis, Joel Ross and Jeff Parker, the trumpeter bounces between straight-ahead jazz, grown-and-sexy R&B and contemporary jazz informed by hip-hop.

The important message remains a secret. Liberty Hall was at fifteen percent capacity when Hill performed with Junius Paul and Makaya McCraven in Lawrence, Kansas, nine weeks ago.
