The Top Albums of 2025

Since Debí Tirar Más Fotos was released on January 5, I’ve listened to the album by There Stands the Glass' 2020 Artist of the Year several times a week. Bad Bunny’s blend of vintage and futuristic sounds remained fresh, a trait that’s made Debí Tirar Más Fotos my favorite new album throughout the year. Selections two through ten in the following account battled for second place. Notable omissions including Cécile McLorin Salvant, SML and Morgan Wallen are represented in my ranking of the best songs of 2025. As always, there’s no overlap between the two listings.

The Top Performances of 2025

I attended 154 concerts at 72 venues on 140 days during the first eleven months of 2025. Club-hopping accounts for the discrepancy. I didn’t attend any major festivals. The most expensive ticket I purchased cost $65. My total outlay for tickets, cover charges and tips for musicians was more than $2,500. A significant change in my personal life as well as the likelihood of my health insurance premiums tripling next year could mean that 2025 was my last hurrah as an avid concertgoer. If that proves to be the case, the fifty performances listed here are all the more meaningful.

Concert Review: Militarie Gun, Liquid Mike and Public Opinion at the Bottleneck

Where was everyone? Only about 150 people attended Militarie Gun’s performance at the Bottleneck on Wednesday, October 30. I haven’t been able to stop wondering why one of the best American rock bands to emerge in the last five years isn’t more popular.

Militarie Gun’s sold-out show at recordBar last year was my favorite performance of 2024. Bolstered by an underground hit, Militarie Gun seemed like the next big thing. I initially felt lucky to buy a $25 ticket in advance of the band’s first appearance in Lawrence, Kansas. Shows what I know.

What went wrong? The crossover moves on the new album God Save the Gun may have repelled day-one fans while failing to attract new listeners. It’s also possible the band’s primary themes of addiction, anxiety and isolation are too dark for most people. Furthermore, true punks may refuse to pay a $25 cover.

The most probable interpretation is that there’s simply a miniscule audience for non-nostalgic, punk-rooted rock in 2025. Less than half-capacity at a small club on a Wednesday night in a Midwestern college town is the apparent ceiling for what may be the world’s best rock band.

The discovery has to be incredibly disheartening to the members of Militarie Gun and absolutely devastating to its hand-picked opening acts Liquid Mike and Public Opinion. Divine intervention may be necessary to right this wrong. God save the gun.

The Top Fifty Performances of 2024

Just because I’m no longer paid to review concerts doesn’t mean I stopped going out. The 157 music performances I’ve attended so far in 2024 represent an unprecedented financial outlay. The out-of-pocket figure would have been even more breathtaking had I been able to bring myself to acquire exorbitantly priced tickets to sold-out appearances in the Kansas City area by Bad Bunny, J. Cole and Grupo Frontera. Visiting the bucket list venues Wigmore Hall, Wiener Hofmusikkapelle and Wiener Staatsoper and catching the Jesus and Mary Chain, Makaya McCraven, Negativland and Jah Wobble for the first time was worth the expense. Unless I live longer than anticipated, the investment will have been worth it.

Concert Review: Militarie Gun, Pool Kids, Spiritual Cramp and Spaced at recordBar

I’ve never listened to Jethro Tull’s 1976 album Too Old to Rock ‘n’ Roll: Too Young to Die, but an inversion of the title came to me as I was repeatedly jostled by the outer ripples of the mosh pit at recordBar on Sunday, February 25. I’m not too old to rock ‘n’ roll: I’m not too young to die.

Ten years older than the second most aged person in the capacity audience of 400, I knew I looked out of place. As a weirdo who attended his first punk show more than 45 years ago, the noise made by Militarie Gun, Pool Kids, Spiritual Cramp and Spacing is an integral part of my musical DNA.

I fell in love with Militarie Gun’s shouty form of punk when I first encountered it on Sham 69’s "Hurry Up Harry" in 1978. As Militarie Gun put it in 2023, Harry should "Do It Faster".

Pool Kids’ technical emo sent me back to Warped Tour circa 2012. I don't care for its style, but the quartet’s infectious exuberance won me over. On the other hand, Spiritual Cramp hooked me from the get-go. Its furious garage-rock is precisely my thing.

The three-and-a-half hour show began with a blast of hardcore fun from Spaced. As it’s from the underground punk world I’ve rediscovered and gratefully inhabited in the aftermath of the pandemic, the Buffalo band brought me full circle.

All Music Is For All People

I don’t think of myself as a weirdo. Yet when my friend Chris Haghirian repeatedly insisted my cultural predilections are extremely unusual during a taping of his Eight One Sixty program did I begin to suspect that maybe I am abnormal. Attempting to justify my listening habits, I recall blurting out something like “all music is for all people.” My appearance on Chris’ show will air at 6 p.m. CST Tuesday, December 19, on 90.9 The Bridge and will stream in perpetuity at the station’s site.

We Let the Liquor Talk: The Top Albums and Songs of 2023

Instigating a cappella singalongs of Morgan Wallen’s hit “Last Night” at parties, backyard barbecues and amid crowds of strangers in public spaces was my favorite prank of 2023. It’s the song by which I’ll remember the year. Determining my favorite album wasn’t as easy. A dozen releases listed below spent time at the top of my albums list during 2023. Wallen’s One Thing at a Time might have been a contender, but I elect not to duplicate artists in these tabulations.
