The Top Performances of 2025

I attended 154 concerts at 72 venues on 140 days during the first eleven months of 2025. Club-hopping accounts for the discrepancy. I didn’t attend any major festivals. The most expensive ticket I purchased cost $65. My total outlay for tickets, cover charges and tips for musicians was more than $2,500. A significant change in my personal life as well as the likelihood of my health insurance premiums tripling next year could mean that 2025 was my last hurrah as an avid concertgoer. If that proves to be the case, the fifty performances listed here are all the more meaningful.

Wednesday with Viet, Stanley and Devin

By the end of the month I’ll have gone to 17 performances at 13 venues spread across 14 days in September. My total ticket outlay is more than $150, not including tips for musicians at jazz gigs. Gasoline and beverages up the ante further.

A time will come when I no longer go out. My priorities may shift or I might lose my hearing, health or savings. Until then, I remain an (old) man about town. This diary entry is intended to provide solace when I become financially or physically infirm. Reading this entry will console my future shut-in self.

I whined about the lineup of a highly-publicized festival with a pal earlier in the week. Once I gave myself permission to forgo attendance at the event, I became open to a multitude of alternatives. I elected to devise a miniature Kansas City festival of my own making on Wednesday.

John McEuen, the venerable leading light of the original Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, was at Knuckleheads. The fabled rockers the Brian Jonestown Massacre were at recordBar. And my friend Aaron’s new band Unity Ticket was making its debut at a house concert.

I didn’t choose any of those shows. I’m currently obsessed with Prism Quartet’s new release El Eco de Un Tambor. I opted to open my evening with its outing at Helzberg Hall with the UMKC Conservatory Wind Symphony. The in-person opening remarks from the celebrity composer Viet Cuong were an unexpected bonus that came with my $15 ticket.

I headed to Black Dolphin following the one-hour and 45-minute concert to check out Stanley Sheldon’s Rhythm Republic. A scene that includes noodle dancers and avid devotees has already developed around the new Latin jazz band led by the man who played bass on Frampton Comes Alive. The $5 cover felt like a bargain.

My trek to the Ship to catch Devin Gray included passage through toxic smoke from a hobo-instigated fire. The peripatetic drummer’s 2023 appearance in Kansas City was my  21st favorite performance that year. Enraptured by his vigorous solo set at the free show, I handed Gray a twenty dollar bill before going home entirely sated.

Negative Mirrors

The circumstances of two conversations I had this week exposed an unattractive aspect of my character. In both instances, I stood outside a flashy luxury car as the driver remained seated behind the wheel. Display screens on the dashboards revealed that one person was tuned to a terrestrial pop radio station. The other monitored a talk radio show.

I couldn’t help but judge them. The four-figure resale value of my car may be just a tenth of the cost of my acquaintances’ vehicles but its Bluetooth capacity means I’m always listening to precisely what I intend to hear. Why wasn’t one associate streaming the Miranda Lambert songs I know she loves? The other should have been grooving to hits by the Commodores in his pricey ride.

The dissonance I experienced during these interactions reminds me that not everyone shares my passion for music. I’m often similarly disappointed when sharing music with friends who possess limited palates. A punk-leaning pal was recently mystified when I sent him a link to a favorite soul-jazz song. Conversely, most friends in the jazz community are dumbstruck by my punk inclinations.

I could share my enthusiasm for Håkon Berre’s new album Mirror Matter by texting my contacts in the improvised music community. They’d be receptive to the dazzling solo percussion recording by the Norway-based musician released this week by the Barefoot Records collective. Instead, I’m recommending it here.

Much like Devin Gray, Berre is capable of sustaining attention while manipulating a “vast diversity of trash and objects… materials such as metal, plastic, cardboard, paper, wood and expanded polystyrene.” I’m looking forward to playing Mirror Matter in my car this weekend. Maybe I’ll even find someone with whom to talk.

By arriving early and through financial outlays, I claimed spots up front at dozens of concerts. The books in the room are also meaningful. My evenings were devoted to reading when I wasn’t attending performances.
